A SHORT REVIEW STUDY OF ACOUSTIC METAMATERIALS
 
An acoustic metamaterial is a type of artificial material made of artificial atoms which can be specifically designed and has a subwavelength periodic structure. It has extraordinary properties such as negative effective material properties that conventional acoustical materials don’t have these properties such as negative dynamic bulk modulus, negative mass density, etc. Acoustic metamaterial properties are dependent on the geometry of their structures and do not relate to their material. So, these material properties don’t depend on the chemical and molecular properties of the materials. Recently, the ability to manipulate sound waves and elastic waves, thanks to these properties, has attracted great interest from scientists and engineers and has been the subject of intense research. In this review, we summarized the historical development research on acoustic metamaterials. We investigated basic structures such as Helmholtz resonators, membrane-type structures, etc., and application fields of acoustic metamaterials such as sound imaging, sound absorption, acoustical cloaking, noise reduction, etc. We examined the numerical methods used in the literature. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of acoustic metamaterials. Owing to the review, we will see gaps in the literature about acoustic metamaterials, and then this review will guide researchers and engineers who will want to work on acoustic metamaterials.
