DEVELOPING A SENSITIVE DETECTION METHOD THAT CAN MEASURE LOWER FORMALDEHYDE AMOUNT IN READY-TO-WEAR CLOTHING

The textile industry is a branch of industry that requires the use of different types of chemicals in the process stages from the processing of the raw material to the final product. The use of formaldehyde, which is a toxic chemical, poses a danger for the textile industry since it aims to protect human health and contribute to a sustainable environment in all process stages from raw fabric production to ready-to-wear production. For this reason, formaldehyde analyses methods are applied according to certain standards to ensure a controlled and safety usege. In the current system, ISO-14148-1 formaldehyde quantity determination test specified by the International Standards Organization is used for the determination of the amount of formaldehyde on textile products. According to this test, the amount of formaldehyde up to the lower limit of 16 ppm can be determined. In this study, a new method has been developed that can reduce the ISO standard, which has a lower limit of 16 ppm, to the lower limit of 3 ppm in order to increase product safety by making a more precise measurement. For this purpose, formaldehyde standard solutions were prepared using titration method and various test samples and calibration solutions were prepared by using these solutions. UV-VIS spectrophotometer device was used to determine the amount of formaldehyde deposited on the sample. The results showed that the amount of free formaldehyde can be determined up to the lower limit of 3 ppm of the current quality standard system.
