DEVELOPMENT OF WOVEN FABRICS WITH PERMANENT ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES

Microorganisms of various types, found in almost every place we touch in our daily lives, pose a threat to hygiene and health. Textile products are environments that provide suitable temperature, humidity and nutrients for the proliferation of microorganisms in terms of their large surface areas and moisture-holding abilities. With the emergence of the Covid-19 Outbreak, social hygiene awareness has increased and antibacterial fabrics have become a necessity. New antimicrobial yarns have been researched due to issues such as the chemical waste problem, water consumption, impact on sustainability and permanence caused by the use of antibacterial chemicals in finishing processes. With this project, it is aimed to investigate the permanence of this feature throughout the product life by developing ready-to-wear fabrics using antibacterial yarn and chemicals. In this study, antibacterial performance properties of Ne 20/1 Everfresh Acrylic yarn content fabrics and 100% Viscose antibakterial finished fabrics were compared. The effect of antibacterial finishing treatment and the use of zinc added thread on antibacterial activity were tested before and after washing. The fabrics were washed 20 times at 60°C for 30 minutes using ECE detergent. The activity of the fabrics was tested with gram positive and gram negative bacteria according to JIS L 1902:2015 standard. When the antibacterial activity results after washing were compared, it was evaluated that this feature is more permanent in the fabric woven with Everfresh acrylic yarn. In general antibacterial protection becomes more effective as the Everfresh acrylic yarn content in the fabric increases.
