Tooth surface coating method is one of the ways to reduce the rate of wear formation in gear mechanisms. Surface coating will be used in future gear technology to increase the load carrying capacity of hardened gears. Abrasions on the gear wheels leave immortal effects on the gear mechanism and the mechanical system in which the gear wheels are used. These negative effects can be defined as performance degradation in the mechanical system, loss of energy, noise pollution and loss of sensitivity of the system. Even though the lubrication process is one of the most important methods that reduces wear from the tooth surface of spur gear wheels, which is one of the machine parts with repeated load transfer and surface contact, spur gear wheels working under high tension improve their tooth surfaces by coating methods. One of these methods is seen as a coating application suitable for working conditions on surfaces operating under high tension.
In the experimental study, the tooth surfaces of the spur gear wheels made of AISI316 stainless steel were coated with WC/C coating material in order to extend the power transmission performance and life of the gear wheels. In the FZG experimental set, 2 spur gear wheels with coating and 2 spur gear wheels without coating were operated at 500 rpm for 500 thousand rotations. By examining the coating effect, damage analyzes were made on the tooth surface of the spur gear. As a result of the damage analysis, WC/C coatings applied to the surfaces were taken into consideration and comparisons were made. When the data obtained at the end of the experimental study were evaluated, the problems that the gear wheel mechanisms were exposed to under working conditions were determined. Solution suggestions were presented for the identified problems. Comparisons of these solutions were made. It was concluded that coated gear wheels had a longer life.
