BIOMECHANICAL COMPARISON OF THE OSTEOPOROTIC AND OSTEOPENIC TRABECULAR BONE SPECIMENS USING MODAL ANALYSIS

Osteoporosis and osteopenia are a common bone disease that often leads to fractures mostly at older ages. Currently, the clinical investigation of the osteoporotic and osteopenic bone structures are widely diagnosed by the Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a practical way. However, it is still struggling to use this technique for the quantification of bone quality classification due it is based on a single 2D projection. On the other hand, recent advancements in hardware instrumentation, computer imaging techniques and numerical techniques showed that creating powerful tools by using these improvements may provide medics to assess bone quality as a higher accuracy. Here, we investigate the use of the micro structural data of the trabecular bone that was extracted from µCT in modal analysis techniques to determine dynamic characteristics. The micro structural data of the osteopenic and osteoporotic femoral head bone samples used in this work are those reported in previous study (Ozan F,. et al, Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery 25(1):1-6, 2017). The µ-finite element technique was implemented on one osteoporotic and one osteopenic trabecular bone model created from µ-CT data to determine apparent elastic modulus. Then, modal analyses were performed on these specimens to compute dynamic characteristics. The primary results showed that osteopenic trabecular bone has higher mode frequencies than osteoporotic specimen. The approach may provide a useful framework to assess the quality of trabecular bone. However, to verify this technique, the number of samples should be increased in future studies.
