CONTRIBUTIONS OF URBAN AGRICULTURE TO ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

All of the benefits, products and services that the natural processes of ecosystems provide to living things are called ecosystem services and are examined under four classes as supply, regulatory, supportive and cultural. Population growth and the demand of urbanization for new residential areas put pressure on natural ecosystems and urban green spaces, causing changes in land uses. Changes in land uses and human activities damage the structure of the earth and atmosphere, which is a living organism, and damage the functioning of the ecological processes and cycles on which the continuity of living life depends. In order to reduce the negative effects of climate change and natural disasters, it is very important to protect and maintain the benefits of ecosystems. Urban green spaces are considered as a nature-based solution tool in reducing the possible effects of climate change, ensuring social integration and healthy life. Green infrastructure is an important tool in increasing the resilience of cities to cope with the negative effects of climate change. Green infrastructure is a network of green areas consisting of interconnected natural, semi-natural and cultural spaces designed and managed to preserve the value and function of ecosystems. Urban agriculture, which is a part of urban green infrastructure systems, has started to take place as nature-based solutions in urban planning thanks to its multiple economic, ecological and social benefits and various ecosystem services it provides. Within the scope of this study, urban agriculture activity is examined and how ecosystem services can be provided through urban agriculture is discussed with literature review and examples.
