INVESTIGATION OF CORROSION EFFECT ON FATIGUE TEST RESULTS OF OUTER TIE ROD (OTR)

In the automotive industry, most of the components are consistently subjected to dynamic loadings due to random excitations from road inputs. In addition, environmental conditions such as corrosive environment, muddy and salty roads challenges life cycle of the vehicles. To ensure expected lifetime, most of the components are surface coated for corrosion resistance. In development phase, some tests are being done according to customer requests to both Outer and Inner Tie Rods. Corrosion and Fatigue phenomenon are one of the dangerous and challenging topics on automotive parts. According to customer specifications, severe and cyclic tests are being performed to the Inner and Outer Tie Rods. After the corrosion test there could be abnormalities on the subparts of Outer Tie Rod which is Ball Stud. Because of the assembly structure, on the connection place between knuckle and sealing system of Outer Tie Rod, corrosion ring may occur after the Sealing System tests. On the ball stud surface, corrosion ring may create a recess which behaves as notch effect and decreases effective diameter of material surface. In this study, first briefly test conditions will be explained separately. After that, worst case condition as combination of the Sealibiliy Test and Fatigue Test will be investigated deeply.
