NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF CFRP STRENGTHENED UNREINFORCED MASONRY WALLS

In masonry structures, walls are the most vulnerable elements under seismic loads. For this reason, the strengthening of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls using different techniques is an important task for structural engineers, and so this topic is more attractive for many researchers in this area. Fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) are one of the techniques that becomes increasingly common solutions for strengthening of URM walls. Due to the inhomogeneous nature, masonry walls exhibit highly nonlinear behavior. Since, masonry structures are widely used throughout the world, it is important to develop a numerical model that reflects the actual behavior of masonry in an accurate and practical way. This paper examines macro-modeling approach to simulate the nonlinear in-plane behavior of the URM walls strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips under compression and shear loading. For this purpose, a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) were accomplished by ANSYS software employing the Drucker-Prager plasticity model for URM while the FRP strips were assumed as a linear elastic orthotropic material. The validity of the model is determined by comparing with experimental ones. The NLFEA results showed good agreement with experimental ones, showing high accuracy in relation to the shear strength capacities and initial stiffness of load-displacement relations. The comparison of numerical and experimental results shows the model have the potential to be used in practice to simulate the in plane behavior of CFRP strengthened URM walls.
