PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYPROPYLENE/GLASS FIBER COMPOSITE BY FILAMENT WINDING PROCESS

Since composite materials are advanced materials with superior properties such as high strength, lightness, high corrosion resistance, and high efficiency-low cost composite production technology compared to metals has attracted attention in recent years. Lightweight applications are of great interest in various sectors, especially in the automotive and aviation, due to their fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly design concept. Over the last 10-20 years, the invention of different material types and processing methods has led to the production of different types of composites for lightweight applications. The use of prepregs is one of the composite processing techniques to produce composite components. Filament winding technology is a production technique that is widely used in the production of composite parts. The main advantage of the fiber winding technique is that it can produce structures such as pipes, pressure vessels, and rocket motor bodies with extremely high stiffness-to-weight, fiber-to-weight ratios, and strength-to-weight ratios compared to conventional metal-designed structures. In the present study, composite parts were produced by winding glass fiber (GF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) prepreg strips on a cylinder mandrel with a filament winding process. Experimental investigations were carried out with the parameters of temperature (260 and 280 °C), roller pressure (1 and 2 bar), and mandrel rotation speed (4.32 and 6.48 mm/min), which are critical for the process. The compressive strengths of the produced composite parts were determined by applying load in the radial direction with the ring stiffness test. As a result, the optimum process conditions were determined according the data obtained from the experimental studies performed.
