WEBGIS BASED POLAR DATA CENTER DESIGN: THE CASE OF TURKEY

Scientific studies carried out in the polar regions are of great importance for the whole world. In the continent, which has more than one hundred research stations, projects are implemented in many branches of science. Especially Antarctica contains valuable information for the scientific world. In order to reach this information, Turkish Antarctic Expeditions (TAE) have been organized to Antarctica since 2017. It is necessary to present the data and publications of the researches made by bringing together scientific projects in a data center. Geographic Information System (GIS) performs the functions of collecting, storing, processing, managing, spatial analysis, querying and presenting of geographic data to assist users in location-based decision-making processes for the solution of various problems. It is possible to present spatial and non-spatial data in a web application through map services and GIS softwares. In this study, as suggested by the Antarctic Treaty, a polar data center was designed through a web-based geographic information system. A relational database was established in the PgAdmin application and a connection was provided with GeoServer via PostGIS. Data exported to Geoserver was presented in OpenLayers web map with Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) according to Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC standards). Back-end and front-end coding was done by creating a dynamic web project in Eclipse software. Thus, a user-friendly WebGIS platform has been developed where researchers can register, add projects and publications, and view existing data on a map. ORCID NO: 0000-0002-6265-8145
