A HYBRID SOLUTION APPROACH BASED ON K-MEANS ALGORITHM AND MATHEMATICAL MODELING FOR SUSTAINABLE WAREHOUSE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT

Warehouses are among the most important facilities in supply chains since they serve as a bridge between the manufacturing plants and customers, and warehousing conditions directly affect the product quality. In this regard, warehouse design and management problem can be considered as one of the most important problems in the supply chain management literature. Although existing literature reveals that there are many studies that focus on different aspects of warehouse design and management problem, these studies only focus on the economic aspect of the problem. On the other hand, environmental regulations, and agreements such as Paris Agreement force companies to design their processes in a more sustainable way. Motivating from this fact, this study proposes a two-phase decision framework for the warehouse design and management problem. In the first phase, K-Means Clustering algorithm is used to determine which products will be warehoused in which warehouse. In the second phase, a mathematical model is proposed that jointly determines the shelf type in each aisle and the location of each product in the warehouse by considering the economic and environmental performance measures. Applicability of the model is tested on a case study. Computational results bring various insights regarding the effect of considering the environmental performance measures in warehouse design and management. ORCID NO: 0000-0002-6290-0448
